(West Virginia) is a state located in the Appalachian region of the southern United States. Virginia is bordered to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north, and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the ninth smallest state in the country, ranked 38th in terms of population, and has the second lowest household income among the 50 states (after Mississippi). Charleston is the capital and the largest city in it.
West Virginia became a state after the Welling Conference in 1861, in which delegates from some federal provinces in northwest Virginia decided to secede from the state during the American Civil War, although the new state included many separatist provinces. [11] West Virginia joined the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key state in the civil war. West Virginia was the only state established by secession from a confederation and the first state to separate from another state since the break-up of Maine from Massachusetts, one of two states established during the American Civil War (the other is Nevada).
The Census Bureau and the Association of American Geographers [6] classify West Virginia as part of the southern United States. The northern tip of Pennsylvania and Ohio, which includes the states of Welling and Warton, runs across the border from the urban Pittsburgh area, while Bluefield in the south is less than 70 miles (110 km) from North Carolina. Huntington is located in the southwest, near Ohio and Kentucky, while Robertsburg and Harpers Ferry in the East End are part of Washington, DC, between Maryland and Virginia. West Virginia has been included in many geographical areas thanks to its unique location, including the Mid Atlantic, South Highlands, and the Southeast United States. It is the only one that lies entirely in the area served by the Abalach Regional Committee; the area is usually known as the "Abalachia". [12]
The state is famous for its mountains and hills, and the logging and coal mining industries were of historic importance. One of the most important karst areas in the world, making it the choice of many recreational and scientific activities. They are also known for a wide range of outdoor leisure activities, including skiing, canoeing, fishing, hiking, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and fishing.
